ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP — An Olympic-style sporting festival comprised of athletes who have undergone life-saving transplant surgeries will take place in West Michigan next summer after a local group saved the event from cancellation.

 

The West Michigan Sports Commission scheduled a press conference Tuesday morning to formally announce its organization of the Transplant Games of America, a national version of the world tournament designed to promote organ donation.

A four-season, Olympic-style archery center once planned for the grounds of the Rockford Sportsman’s Club in Algoma Township could well be on its way to a new home.

 

The facility found itself homeless this summer after club members rejected the conditions in a $500,000 state grant that was to be awarded for the project.

HOLLAND -- Brad White is the consummate cycling teammate, but he may just have to abandon his fellow riders on the United Health Care team for Saturday’s Herman Miller Grand Cycling Classic in downtown Grand Rapids.

 

White’s wife, Jenny, is due any day with the couple’s second child, and the Holland resident has made it clear where his priorities lie.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP — Volunteers can start clearing paths in the woods for the area’s third mountain bike trail of the West Michigan Mountain Biking Alliance.

 

The Plainfield Township Board approved an agreement to allow the nonprofit to create trails in public parkland on 10 Mile Road, south of the intersection with Wolven Avenue.

ARLINGTON, VA, August 12, 2011 – The nation’s top professional cyclists are only a week away from hitting the bricks of downtown Grand Rapids to compete for USA Cycling’s Men’s Pro Criterium National Championship. On Sat., Aug. 20, the Herman Miller Grand Cycling Classic will serve as the host for this prestigious event in the heart of downtown.

A park plan that includes 12 baseball diamonds, three soccer fields, acres of mountain biking trails, restrooms and picnic facilities was unveiled at the Plainfield Township Planning Commission meeting July 26.

 

Parks and Recreation Director John Short revealed for the first time publicly a master plan the township has been working on in conjunction with engineering firm Progressive AE, Kent County and a number of private organizations for a multi-sports complex unlike any other in the Rockford area.

 

 

Bicycle Motocross Racers (BMX) from the National Bicycle League (NBL) will descend upon Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Mid-West Challenge Championship the weekend of July 23-24. With the 2011 NBL season wrapping up in September at the Grand Nationals, Grand Rapids BMX will be the site for one of four regional championships taking place over the weekend of July 23-24. While regional champions will be crowned, points are still being awarded for the NBL National titles.
