Grand Rapids competition serves as qualifier for the Judo Cadet World Championships  

Grand Rapids, Mich., March 2, 2011 –The USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships will be held April 2-3, 2011 at the DeVos Place (303 Monroe Avenue Northwest Grand Rapids, MI 49503). This year’s event will showcase over 400 of the top U.S. amateurs, ranging from 5-28 years old.

Rockford recently was selected as the location for the 2011 Special Olympics of Michigan State Basketball Tournament, bringing an estimated 750 athletes and their families to town for a two-day event.


According to a study by the West Michigan Sports Commission, the Special Olympics tournament is estimated to bring about $500,000 in revenue to the host community, said Rebecca Cajka, tournament co-chairwoman for the Grand Rapids Jaycees.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP -- Testing the waters for a $10 million fund-raising campaign, the West Michigan Sports Commission will first seek private funds for a 12-field sports complex on 10 Mile Road at Wolven Avenue.


Mike Guswiler, executive director, said if philanthropists provide a certain level of support, the commission will take the campaign to the public, possibly by fall.


Grand Rapids, Mich., January 12, 2011 – Ride The Divide, an award-winning feature-length documentary about the world’s toughest mountain bike race, will continue its Midwest mid-winter tour in Grand Rapids on Thursday, January 27 at the Wealthy Theatre starting at 7:00 PM. The film chronicles the story of several mountain bikers who attempt the 2,711-mile race named the Tour Divide along the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains.
