West Michigan Sports Commission could benefit from shift in Kent County hotel tax payout

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Experience Grand Rapids and the West Michigan Sports Commission are working on a deal through which they would share revenue from Kent County’s tax on hotel and motel rooms as county officials are proposing an end to their direct contribution to the sports promotion organization.

Since it was formed in 2007, the Sports Commission has received $1.15 million directly from county taxpayers as a line item in the county’s annual budget. The move being proposed lines up with the county’s promise in 2007 to commit $1 million over five years to the Sports Commission as it sought an independent, sustainable funding model.
