Felix Makes Debut at Opening Ceremonies of Meijer State Games of Michigan in Cliffhanger Jousting Match; Now Available for Public Appearances in West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. June 24, 2013 – We see them at events. We pose with them in photos. We give them high-fives and hugs. And we know them on a first-name basis. They are our beloved sports mascots – and now there will be another one in cheering sections throughout West Michigan – Felix the Fox.

Felix greeted sports enthusiasts for the first time as the new mascot of the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC) in apropos fashion – in a jousting match in which he saved the day by besting Lansing Lugnuts’ Big Lug in a final, surprise round after Big Lug defeated Grand Rapids mascots Griff and Crash during Friday’s Opening Ceremonies of the Meijer State Games of Michigan.

“Felix is a natural addition to the West Michigan Sports Commission team and the region in general,” said Mike Guswiler, President of the West Michigan Sports Commission. “We think the community will love his social yet competitive nature as he appears at sporting events and tournaments around town to cheer on teams and interact with fans.”

A red fox representing the animal species found throughout Michigan, Felix was inspired by the winning design of the “Who’s Your Mascot” Challenge the West Michigan Sports Commission initiated in January to involve the community in creating an official mascot to attend youth and amateur sporting events in the region. Alyssa Parsons, a senior at Kendall College of Art and Design, submitted the winning design plus the name suggestion of Felix the Fox.

Felix Available for Public Events

While sometimes thought of as solitary animals, this particular fox is a social creature, and he likes to visit people – especially at events relating to youth and amateur sports. To request an appearance, visit westmisports.com/About/requestmascot and complete the online Appearance Request Form (Completion of the form is a request and does not guarantee an appearance.)

Since Felix is one popular fox, requests must be received a minimum of one month prior to the event. A donation of $40 to the West Michigan Sports Commission is requested of the organization seeking the appearance.
